I just started browsing a little book called “What is Spirit?”, edited by Lexie Brockway Potamkin. It’s a collection of answers to that question by numerous artists, philosophers, shamans, religious leaders, political leaders and common people.
Around the world I’m sure there are as many definitions as grains of sand on the beach. I think it’s an ongoing process for all of us. At the beginning of the book a blank page suggests the reader posit a definition of spirit before continuing. At the end is another blank page. It will be interesting to see if my definition changes after reading the ideas of others.
It’s been awhile since I wrote specifically about spirit. I wrote a long personal article on it months ago, now posted at the top of this blog in the menu bar. I also wrote a short definition for the book, which I posted here. But before you read either of those, go ahead and give me what you’ve got in your head right now.
What is spirit to you?
I generally avoid answering questions like this one. For once, I will answer. To me, spirit is Self, as opposed to self. It is intuitive and divine, not egotistical or intellectual. It is love, as opposed to fear. It is pure life, the part of us which is eternal and all-knowing. It is the Child, not yet ruined.
Hugs,
Betty
Hi b- I’m glad you answered. What a poetic description. I know it’s a difficult idea to put into words. But it helps stir people to be aware.
take care,
D
HI David, Long time since we spoke! How’s it going? I love your blog. Spirit for me is life-force energy.
All the best, Noel
What is Spirit to you?…?…to me…?
Am I the ORACLE, you asshole?
What is F.U.B.A.R.?
Now, I know you will banish me. That’s okay. Perhaps we will meet again, one sorry day. Who knows?
Betty, you seem very beautiful to me:

Spirit is the connection we have to our divine creator. In spirit, we are whole, powerful, infinite and one. It is when we separate from spirit and embrace only our wounded human side that we get into trouble. When we connect ourselves back or “call back our spirit”, then we become the person we are meant to be. In spirit, we have the power to heal ourselves, create the life we desire and manifest all that we dream.
Spirit is the all encompassing essence that keeps all of our lives going. It’s the energy behind, inside, outside and within everything.
We can learn to heal anything because we are one with this energy.
It has no boundaries, there are no limits.
I recently met a healer named Master Sha. He is a wonderful teacher who offers healing techniques to heal mind, body, emotions and spirit. His recent book “soul communicaiton” is great for learning ways to speak with the divine and other souls for guidance and help. I have been practicing many of his suggestions and really find more peace and happiness in each day. Love the results of feeling better and feeling blessed. thank you master sha.
